Cancer Support Community – A Rebirth

“…because no one should face cancer alone.”

Can there be a more noble vision?  For anyone dealing with this disease, the thought that you are not by yourself is one of profound comfort.  The knowledge that there are those who stand with each cancer-touched person is a source of hope and guidance.  For 29 years, the local chapters of the national Wellness Community have done this for cancer sufferers.

On October 20th the Wellness Community of Central New Jersey, officially changed its name to the Cancer Support Community of Central New Jersey.  This follows the name change of the national organization after its merger last year with Gilda’s Club Worldwide.  The new name is intended to emphasize the group’s prime mission, to support those touched by cancer.   The non-profit will continue to offer all programs free of charge.  They assist persons of all ages with all types of cancer.

CSC’s primary goal is to empower those affected by cancer to gain and keep control of their lives.  They want to turn patients into survivors and to teach how to live with cancer or through its treatment.  CSC is not about surrender, but is about having the tools to fight the battle against cancer and to cope with its consequences. CSC reaches that lofty goal everyday.

The CSC Website is robust with information, connections, coping ideas and up to date advice.  The site includes sections for newly diagnosed patients, long-term survivors, caregivers, and those needing financial advice.  They post up to date information on legislation affecting cancer care.   There is an Internet radio show, videos and blog.  This Website is a powerful tool for the cancer patient.

The Central Jersey Community offers and provides a remarkable range of services.  They give multiple types of support groups, survivorship programs, education workshops, counseling, and mind /body programs.  CSC gives hundreds of events at their site and in the community, on a wide range of topics for cancer patients and their families.  In East Brunswick CSC holds frequent meetings at the Central Jersey Oncology Center off Cranbury Road.

CSC of Central NJ is located in a beautiful 250-year-old home just off Route 287 in Bedminster.   As sunlight sprays across varnished wide board floors, there is a calm and warmth, which settles the heart.  Outside, garden fountains and flowers embrace.   It is a special place offering solace during tough times.

There are three other CSC sites in New Jersey.  CSC – Northern Jersey Shore, is located in Eatontown and has an office in Toms River. Gilda’s Club – Northern New Jersey is in Hackensack. Finally, Gilda’s Club – South Jersey is in Linwood.  All have extensive and active programs. (Click on name to link to each).

Cancer is an awful disease.  It affects body and soul.  Fortunately, we do not need to face it alone.  Not only do we have our family and friends, but also we have people such as the selfless individuals that are the Cancer Support Community.  It is wonderful to know that in hard times these warrior angel are there.
